The Hip-Hop Storyteller: Tony Banks

Based in Brooklyn, New York, Music Bear Tony Banks is aiming to be perceived as the ultimate hip-hop storyteller, and his latest single ‘Run!’ would suggest that he is more than on his way to achieving this.

As part of the LGBT community, Tony has fought against the typical mainstream image that hip-hop music is a hetero-dominated genre, finding his own corner of the musical world which sees him mixing a potent blend of rap, dance and house with his own genre of hip-hop. It’s music for the club, it’s music for everyday and most importantly, it’s music for today with the way that it highlights the faults in society and the oppression of black lives in America.

Many perceive the genre of hip-hop to be nothing more than fast lyrics and attitude, but Tony Banks has transformed the style into something much more with ‘Run!’, managing to tell a story beneath the pulsating beats and soul inspired vocals of collaborators, EarthTone and JwlB.

Standing out from the crowd whilst going from nothing to something, all on his own merits with the help of his outspoken and unapologetic personality – Tony personifies the American Dream. This guy is more than just an artist.

Twinwood Festival set for August 2015

The original and best vintage music and dance festival:

Twinwood Festival set  for August 2015

twinwood-by-stephen-astley-jones-05

After its huge success last year, the UK’s largest vintage music and dance extravaganza, Twinwood Festival will return to Twinwood Arena in Clapham, Bedfordshire this summer. It will be the event’s 14th year, held over the weekend of 29th-31st August, and it’s set to be the biggest yet, with countless attractions for festival goers who visit from all over the world.

For a taste of what the weekend has in store, check out some clips from last year’s festival:

Attractions

As ever, the festival will be a haven for music lovers who have an appreciation for good popular retro music. With 60 live bands playing music through the decades over 11 venues, including the centrepiece outdoor arena, festivalgoers are spoilt for choice. The bands and artists will include the excellent Si Cranstoun, The London Swing Orchestra, 60s group The Overtures, Rock ‘n’ Roll band Joey and the Jivers, The Revolutionaires big band and many, many more class acts. From the classic days of Charlston, through the 40s to the rock and roll of the 50s and the music of the swinging 60s, the range of acts is vast – right the way through to electro-swing acts that blend tradition with modernity.

With so much choice, it’s just as well all the venues have acres of sprung dance floors which reverberate to the beat of the music, and after you’ve been to the retro dance lessons that will be available across the weekend, taking in swing dancing, modern jive, rock and roll, the jitterbug and plenty more besides, you’ll be on the floors as well.

To help set the scene, Twinwood Festival Village will also be filled with over 100 vintage traders selling fabulous fashions and collectables, plus there will be flying displays, classic vehicles and museums to feast your eyes on. There will even be a choice of hair and beauty salons to make sure you look the part.

Other live entertainment will include comedy and vintage fashion shows, and a host of music bars and eclectic food outlets serving a great range of food and drink throughout.

Last but not least, 2015 sees the return, for only the second year, of the Mr and Miss Vintage UK competition, which will crown those who have most accurately captured the look and spirit of the festival. The contest is one of the centre pieces of the whole weekend, where the winners go home with exclusive prizes presented by Twinwood’s special guest star Anita Harris.

Fantastic camping for caravans, motor homes and tents is provided next to the Festival Village and five nights stay, with good facilities, is available to 3 day ticket holders at a great price.

Vita Chambers asks ‘What If?’ with new dance-pop single

Canadian pop-princess set to bring GOLD standard to the UK on 31st March

Having toured with Justin Bieber in her native Canada, Vita Chambers is set to bring her North American success to UK shores with new double a-side ‘Fix You’/‘What If?’

At only 20 years of age, Vita Chambers has already had a musical career to be admired. Signed at 16 by Universal Motown, after sending them her MySpace address, she has since toured with aforementioned country-mate Bieber and performed at the prestigious Soul Train Awards. However, Vita Chambers soon grew tired of being moulded by her record label.  As a result of this, she has gone out on her own; recently starting her own production company, Gold Note Productions. Now, she is able to fully express her personality and views within her music. Striving for independence and for her voice to be truly heard, this is clearly not your average young artist.

‘Fix You’ is a pure slice of electro dance-pop. It’s tone is more sombre than ‘What If?’ This showcases Vita Chambers’ versatility as a performer. As the reflective verses lead into a soaring chorus; the radio friendly sound that this young artist has created becomes clearly evident. This view has been shared by many, as ‘Fix You’ has already gone gold in Canada. The positive reception that this track has already received has also caused her to be nominated for a Canadian Music ‘Juno Award’ for dance track of the year.

‘What If?’ is an upbeat dance-pop hit in waiting, complete with sing along chorus and a superb vocal performance from Chambers. But underneath the pop sheen, it’s also a song the tackles a serious message – to fall in love with whomever you wish, regardless of race, orientation or other social norms, and do what makes you happy.

‘Fix You’/‘What If?’ marks her first foray into UK territories, where she aims to keep her incredible run of success going.

Jordan Crisp v Nana D: African rhythms meet mainstream dance with new single ‘Ngoma’

In one of the most intriguing collaborations in recent memory, superstar producer Jordan Crisp is set to team up with independent Ghanaian artist Nana D for new track ‘Ngoma’.

The track, released December 2nd, sees Crisp’s electronic dance sensibilities married to traditional African drum beats and a hook sung by Nana D, creating a rhythmic, energetic track which has the potential to hit the club charts hard.

The accompanying video, directed by Nana D himself, continues the theme, combining contemporary animation techniques to a traditional African setting. You can check out the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRwMhIyK-wg

JordancrispJordan Crisp, signed to EMI at age 18 on the strength of self-produced music that got picked up as soundtrack by MTV for the likes of Cribs and My Super Sweet 16, has most recently been developing his reputation in the world of film. His soundtrack for number 1 UK box office hit ‘Streetdance 3D’ saw him win his first Gold LP, and subsequent work on the sequel and the Horrid Henry movie has been well received.

Nana Rolling stoneGrowing up in Ghana, West Africa, Nana D was surrounded by the traditional music of his homeland as well as the Motown, disco and funk in his father’s record collection. A subsequent move to the UK in the 1980’s introduced the young music enthusiast to the hip-hop of NWA and EPMD, and later the UK jungle and garage scenes. This varied musical education saw Nana D form a successful hip-hop act who were among the first UK rap groups to have their video played on MTV Base. He also forged a career in film production, a skill which he now utilises in his most recent music projects with Jordan Crisp and producer Picasso.
