Vispa’s ‘Cosmic Force’

We find a lot of artists these days who take inspiration from bygone eras, particularly the 80s, but Iranian artist, Vispa, has gone full hog in empowering that retro sound in his music.

As an electronic artist, synthesizers are big part of his work and as we all know, the synth was synonymous the 80s period.

‘Cosmic Force’ employs a heavy dance beat with spacey synths and choral-like drones that could have been made 30 thirty years ago. However, this isn’t to say that Vispa’s music is out dated, by any means. He has reignited the flame of this electronic style and there’s sure to be many electronic music lovers who will be pleased to hear it make a comeback.

Since there are no lyrics in ‘Cosmic Force’, there is a definite filmic nature to the track: you can truly imagine it accompanying an action film, or even as a TV theme.

At the age of 19, Vispa decided to attend a music class where he learnt his trade, working primarily with synthesizers and keyboards. As he learnt more, Vispa began experimenting with his own melodies and beats, often just playing things by ear, how he wanted them to sound.

Supposedly, ‘Cosmic Force’ was inspired by Vispa’s daydreams on space and the world beyond, which can be clearly seen when listening to the track.

Track Review: Leat Haber’s Vintage Inspired ‘Wait for Me’

She has been labelled as Israel’s own Amy Winehouse, but Leat Haber’s ‘Wait for Me’ has a unique vintage inspired edge that takes us back to the old days.

Having listened to the likes of the Temptations, Jackson 5 and Cat Stevens whilst she was growing up, Leat has honed a quirky pop sound based on her favourite elements of older music. Leat is so devoted to the vintage image and vibe that she even uses old equipment in and out of the studio to obtain the perfect retro sound and stay faithful to the music that has fueled her songwriting passion. You can’t knock her for being a perfectionist!

The clean guitar tone conjures images of a 60s American high school dance, like something from a movie, whilst Leat’s vocals provide a distinct richness to the track.  The subtle doo-wap back up singers complete the 50s/60s image and contribute to the overall texture of the song. This is one thing that makes Leat’s music so special, not only is it a delight for the ears, but it creates vivid imagery of the time period that one can easily imagine; Leat seems to be reinventing the music of then, for now.

‘Wait for Me’ was inspired partly by the television series, Mad Men, in which many of the female characters are stay at home wives, whilst the men work and often cheat without anything being said. Leat considers herself a feminist and so her inspiration for the song is justified as well as being an original starting point for song writing.

Comparing Leat to other artists is a difficult task when she is producing old-style pop music in the modern day, but vocally, she isn’t a million miles away from acts such as Paloma Faith, Gabriella Cilmi or even Duffy.

Overall, ‘Wait for Me’ is an wonderfully crafted piece of nostalgia made relevant for today’s audience, so watch this space when it comes to Leat Haber!

Twinwood Festival set for August 2015

The original and best vintage music and dance festival:

Twinwood Festival set  for August 2015

twinwood-by-stephen-astley-jones-05

After its huge success last year, the UK’s largest vintage music and dance extravaganza, Twinwood Festival will return to Twinwood Arena in Clapham, Bedfordshire this summer. It will be the event’s 14th year, held over the weekend of 29th-31st August, and it’s set to be the biggest yet, with countless attractions for festival goers who visit from all over the world.

For a taste of what the weekend has in store, check out some clips from last year’s festival:

Attractions

As ever, the festival will be a haven for music lovers who have an appreciation for good popular retro music. With 60 live bands playing music through the decades over 11 venues, including the centrepiece outdoor arena, festivalgoers are spoilt for choice. The bands and artists will include the excellent Si Cranstoun, The London Swing Orchestra, 60s group The Overtures, Rock ‘n’ Roll band Joey and the Jivers, The Revolutionaires big band and many, many more class acts. From the classic days of Charlston, through the 40s to the rock and roll of the 50s and the music of the swinging 60s, the range of acts is vast – right the way through to electro-swing acts that blend tradition with modernity.

With so much choice, it’s just as well all the venues have acres of sprung dance floors which reverberate to the beat of the music, and after you’ve been to the retro dance lessons that will be available across the weekend, taking in swing dancing, modern jive, rock and roll, the jitterbug and plenty more besides, you’ll be on the floors as well.

To help set the scene, Twinwood Festival Village will also be filled with over 100 vintage traders selling fabulous fashions and collectables, plus there will be flying displays, classic vehicles and museums to feast your eyes on. There will even be a choice of hair and beauty salons to make sure you look the part.

Other live entertainment will include comedy and vintage fashion shows, and a host of music bars and eclectic food outlets serving a great range of food and drink throughout.

Last but not least, 2015 sees the return, for only the second year, of the Mr and Miss Vintage UK competition, which will crown those who have most accurately captured the look and spirit of the festival. The contest is one of the centre pieces of the whole weekend, where the winners go home with exclusive prizes presented by Twinwood’s special guest star Anita Harris.
