UK singer-songwriter Alan Bonner demonstrates unique nocturnal sound with new album ‘Night Music’

This is the type of music that will endure long after other fads and fashions have passed on by’ – Electric Harmony Blog

Mr. Bonner has the means of a pauper but sings with the heart of a king.’ – Surviving The Golden Age Blog

UK singer-songwriter Alan Bonner is set to deliver his third album, Night Music – a smoky, dimly-lit collection of songs inspired by London and its nocturnal inhabitance.

As Bonner puts it: ‘songs inspired by drinkers, thieves, prostitutes, spurned lovers, fallen rock stars and chance meetings with strangers on night buses. Songs inspired by the disaffected creatures that take to the streets and the bars of the city when the sun goes down.

The album touches on personal tales of long-distance romances, family relationships and depression as well as world-encompassing topics of love, hope and mortality. This is all delivered with a vivid and poetic lyricism certain to appeal to fans of artists like Rufus Wainwright, The National, Sufjan Stevens and Perfume Genius.

Produced by Aneek Thapar and recorded in South London, Night Music’s backdrop is one of intimate pianos, orchestral strings and minimalist percussion that perfectly encapsulate the album’s title.

He holds this whole history of gay men’s relationships in his music that Beyonce as a straight woman will never once hold.’ – QX magazine

Bonner has regularly worked with LGBT charities, being a gay artist himself. His interests in social issues have also extended to substance abusers and the homeless, having worked voluntarily and professionally as a support worker.

Having already released two well-received previous albums, Bonner will hopefully build on his success with this new release. Already, he has received previous airplay on stations such as BBC 6 Music and MTV Italy, and achieved press coverage from Grazia, Gay Times, Attitude, Time Out London and RTE Ireland.

Although based in London, the artist has spent a lot of time recently living out of a suitcase, touring extensively across the UK, Ireland, Europe, Australia and the US.

Afro-pop rising star Wiyaala brings ‘Peace’ to the world and new self-titled album Wiyaala

She’s the only woman in the world singing in Sissala – and she will mesmerize you

CNN Africa

Wiyaala is a feisty young woman from northern Ghana, bursting with attitude and drive

BBC News – World – Africa

Set to play WOMAD this year, multi-award winning Afro-pop songstress Wiyaala has come a long way since her humble background growing up in the small Ghanaian village of Funsi.

The last few years have seen Wiyaala rise from rags to riches. Now on the cusp of becoming a worldwide star, the singer hopes to inspire others by spreading her message of love and peace, whilst also raising awareness of the injustices still taking place to this day in third-world countries all over the world.

Her new self-titled album Wiyaala has already received nationwide success in Ghana. She now hopes to establish a global audience.

Stream the single ‘Peace’ from the album here on Soundcloud:

cover_W_2500x2500px_RGB.jpg

The record is a selection of vibrant Afro-pop anthems sung largely in Sissala, but with a poppy catchiness inspired by Western Culture.

As the singer explains: ‘My album is the product of my environment as a young girl growing up in a West African Village at a time when the influences of Western TV and video first impacted on the African villager …You are hearing my African heritage fusing with the sounds and techniques of western production.’

Wiyaala rose to recognition after coming first place in a 2012 Vodafone Icons reality show as part of the group Black n Peach, a year earlier emerging as the second runner-up in Ghana’s Stars of the Future talent show. She has become famous despite little radio airplay, rejecting the music industry’s ruthless commercialist side and becoming famous as a result of her live performances and what she stands for. Grace Jones, Tina Turner and Angelique Kidjo are artists that she is sometimes compared to.

Often referred to as the ‘Young Lioness of Africa’, she has become renowned for her activism, working to abolish child marriage and abuse in her home continent  as well as campaigning for women’s right to education – freedoms that we take for granted here in the Western world.

Her fierce ideals are a result of her impoverished upbringing and being a first-hand witness to social injustice. ‘At school, I have seen young teenage girls pulled out of the classroom to be married off. The next time you see them they are pregnant and selling pepper in the market… When I was small, we were often hungry. Sometimes we would catch a mouse, roast it and share it amongst 3 or 4 children.’

She is currently working on projects with The Ministry of Gender and Child Protection and UNCEF in Ghana.

Her debut album ‘Wiyaala’ is out now

The Breaking Pattern revitalise emo rock on spectacular new album, ‘There Are Roadmaps In Our Veins’

Somebody told us about these guys from across the pond – Check them out!

Arizona indie rock group, The Breaking Pattern, are bringing a fresh new sound to the emo scene on their debut album There Are Roadmaps In Our Veins. Anthemic vocals and reverb-soaked guitars make for a euphoric and equally lovelorn summery sound.

The band cite emo and pop-punk acts such as Real Friends, The Wonder Years, Man Overboard and The Hotelier as influences. Fellow Arizona indie rockers Lydia have offered the band much support, their guitarist Justin Camacho even co-writing songs with the band in the past.

The album lyrically tackles the hurdles of a failing relationship. The band’s frontman explains: ‘The album is somewhat of a break-up album, chronicling the various stages of a doomed relationship from the moments leading up to the split until the resolution and recovery. I say “somewhat” because it is not a concept album. The songs do not tell one specific story, but are a compilation of personal experience and the stories I’ve witnessed from friends who had their own hearts disintegrated into red dust.

Producer Cory Spotts engineers the record, having worked with other esteemed Arizona acts including The Maine, The Summer Set, BlessTheFall and Job for a Cowboy.

Within the first few months of their formation, the band opened for celebrated acts such as Emarosa, This Century, Weatherbox and The Rocket Summer. They have since sold out multiple shows.

Vocalist Derek Hackman previously fronted a band called Ezer. Having long had a passion for music, he began writing songs aged 11. Moving house frequently as a child, Derek dealt with long periods of social isolation that fuelled his songwriting. The first time he ever sang live was at his high school graduation – in front of 6000 people. He was so nervous he vomited in the bathroom only minutes prior to going up on stage.

Derek is also a published poet and has a degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology.

Making up the band’s other members include drummer Brandon (who also handles a lot of the photography), guitarist Nick (who happens to also be an award-winning coffee roaster) and bassist Jacob (who is Columbian and fluent in Spanish).

Electrifying self-titled debut album from Belfast rock band, The Irontown Diehards

Belfast band, The Irontown Diehards, deliver this self-titled debut album, a hi-octane rock riff-fest set for release on May 27th.

Citing Alter Bridge, Black Stone Cherry and Bon Jovi as influences, The Irontown Diehards are a band that hard rock enthusiasts worldwide need in their iTunes libraries. Making up their sound are belting vocal hooks, speeding rhythms and headbanging riffs that’ll leave your neck toned.

As described by Belfast Metalheads Reunited: ‘they have combined the essential elements to forge a fierce rock sound that is delivered as if they wield a battleaxe’.

A formidable live act, the band match their lively sound with a distinctive image, dressing unconventionally in Victorian worker garb as if they just so happened to stumble out of a time machine into the 21st Century and discover electric guitars. All the members have previously played in top Northern Ireland rock and metal bands including Last Known Addiction, Almighty Fallen, Stormzone, Warcrux and Dead Zebra. Their collective musical experience shows, both in their musicianship and their performance.

‘Fly High’ is the lead single, a soaring ballad with an explosive chorus. It features a cracking guitar solo and culminates into a mighty and epic crescendo.

‘’…there is no doubt that they are bringing something new and interesting to a Northern Ireland scene in which it can sometimes be difficult to find’’ write Planet Mosh.

Young Starlet Naomi With New Single – Rivers Run

Think the edgy melancholy of Lorde, the irresistible melodies of Taylor Swift, the power and magnetism of Adele. Naomi is all these things and more. Naomi is now stepping it up with the recording of her new album, with the first single, the incredible Rivers Run a calling card for what is going to be the record that pushes this young talent firmly into the mainstream. It’s only a matter of time.

PRESS RELEASE IMAGE

“I love singing, playing guitar, piano, ukulele, but my favourite thing to do is to write songs.”

She said: “When I was really young, I was obsessed with Avril Lavigne, like properly obsessed. In later years it was artists who you could tell write their own music and put a lot of themselves into it that really resonated with me, people like Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, as well Adele and Coldplay. I really love how Lorde can be so innovative whilst staying so accessible. That’s something I always try to put into my own music.”
